Group to Gunner's Mate Joseph Mitchell. Mitchell was awarded the Medal of Honor for the defense of the Legations in Peking during the Boxer Rebellion. (The location of his Medal of Honor and Sampson Medal is unknown.) He was one of only five US Legation defenders who were members of the Military Order of the Dragon and was one of only six US Navy personnel who were Legation defenders. Mitchell was the gunner who found the International Gun and put it into service. All four campaign medals are original BB&B strikes, officially numbered, and also engraved with his name on the edge. This is probably one of the most historically important groups of US Navy medals for the Boxer Rebellion.
