US Navy West Indies Campaign Medal with first pattern ribbon. Original BB&B strike, rim numbered 617, and nicely engraved "John Alexis Mudd" 617 " Paymaster, USN".
Although Mudd's bio of service lists him at the New York Navy Yard from 1896 to 1900, a contemporary newspaper article indicates that he was on temporary duty at the Naval Station at Key West in 1898. This is the service that would have qualified him for this West Indies Medal.
